Hi,

We have a huge task of deciding the server setup that will be needed to host our applications. We have different solutions in our mind, but not sure which one to follow and best suits our requirement. Solutions like, a load balanced server / 2 node Cluster for each application or standalone servers for each application.

Hence we need inputs so that we can decide on our setup.

- Our software requirements on which these application are designed are as follows,

o OS – Linux

o Tech Platform - Java based - J2EE

o DB – MySQL

o Application server – Tomcat.

- All the 4 applications are based on a keyword search. The keywords are defined and there can be a single, many or even multiple keywords for which these applications will work on. For e.g.: “paralikar”, “www.paralikar”, “paralikar.com”, etc.

- Application #1 (we assume it App1), will fetch images related to the given keyword, for example keyword is “etisbew”, it will fetch all the images related to this keyword and compare it with the image which are already fed into the db. The results will be stored in the DB depending on the comparative results. Images stored in the db can be one or many per keyword.

- Application #2 (App2) – This application scans through internet domain names to search the given keyword, just like the earlier one. It scans through all the domain names and shortlists the URLs which matches the criteria. This also includes a mailing facility which sends results through mails when the scans are complete.

- Application #3 (App3) – This connects to multiple IRC servers using their APIs and scans for the defined keywords. The results will be stored in the DB, as the need may be.

- Application #4 (App4) – This connects to search engines, news groups, etc and scans for the defined keywords. All the results will be stored in Db and a email sent with the summary of the results.

- Web Server (Front End) – This has to be 99.99% available to the customers or clients who connect and check their daily updates.

Please let me know if you need more info.

For your information, following are some questions and answers:

Q) How critical is the application?

A) All are near to critical applications which fire searches on a prescribed schedule. But the schedule is normally once or twice in a day or can be manually fired.

Q) What is the affordable downtime?

A) Except Web server and DB server, all other applications can bear a down time of 1% in a year. Web Server and DB server needs to be always available.

Q) How big the database is expected to grow in next 6-9 months?

A) It can be in GBs to TBs.

We need to know what kind of hardware solution should we go for? Currently we do have some higher server class systems with us, which should be utilized in this setup.

If you need any more clarification please let me know.

For the db servers, of course it will need something bigger. Dual Opties
with 4-8GB RAM depending on the db size and index.

The frontend servers can be regular dual core P4s, with 2GB RAM,
depending if they want to cache or not.

If its mission critical, you can setup multiple servers and load
balance it or cluster it.

This is all ballpark hardware. Were you planning on building your own server, purchasing one?

Is it just me or does everyone else only see question marks?
